Learning about the Oracle Cloud and the new Alta skin.

I had a conversation with +David Haimes on twitter the other day about blogging, and realized I have not been blogging for a long long time.

While I can find information about almost everything with Google or Stack Overflow, I realized that it's sometime hard to find the one piece of information which is relevant for you, in your current context.

It usually ends up being a compilation of multiple blog posts or answers; it's (more...)

UKOUG Annual Conference (Tech 2014 Edition)

The conference

This year the UKOUG's tour of Britain's post-industrial heritage brought the conference to Liverpool. The Arena & Convention Centre is based in Liverpool docklands, formerly the source of the city's wealth and now a touristic playground of museums, souvenir shops and bars. Still at least the Pumphouse functions as a decent pub, which is one more decent pub than London Docklands can boast. The weather was not so much cool in the 'Pool (more...)

#FISMA Ready @Ubuntu LTS @18F

Ubuntu is a very popular operating system (OS) in the cloud space but the Federal government has been reluctant to adopt Ubuntu, preferring to stick with Redhat as their Linux flavor of choice.  As the Government moves toward the cloud it makes sense to me that Ubuntu would start to see some more play time.  One of the big hurdles to this is the need to ensure that Ubuntu meets the Federal Information Security Management Act (more...)

I have an idea for an app, what’s next?

This is a question that I get asked quite often.  My first thoughts are:

1. An app isn't necessarily a business.
2. Can you generate enough revenue to pay for the development?
3. There is usually more to an app than just the app.
4. Which platforms?

I thought I'd take this opportunity to address each of these points in more detail.  Before I do this, I think it's important to say that I don't (more...)

Can A Background Process Impact A Foreground Process And Its Database Time?

Have you ever heard someone say, "Background processes do not impact foreground processes because they run in the background and in parallel with foreground processes." I've heard this hundreds of times!

While doing some performance research I came across a great example of how an Oracle Database background (more...)

2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The Louvre Museum has 8.5 million visitors per year. This blog was viewed about 120,000 times in 2014. If it were an exhibit at the Louvre Museum, it would take about 5 days for that many people to see it.

Compliance and File Monitoring in EM12c

I was recently asked to help a customer set up File Monitoring in Enterprise Manager and I thought since I haven’t blogged in a while, this could be a good way to start back up again..
Enterprise manager 12c provides a very nice Compliance and File Monitoring Framwork. There are many Built in Frameworks include for PCI DSS and STIG but this How-to will only focus on a custom file monitoring framework.

Oracle 12c: DataPump import in NOLOGGING mode

I have not been blogging for quite some time now and thought of ending the year with one last blog. I picked a very simple  yet powerful datapump topic for blogging. Read on …

As is the norm after exhausting all tuning options, we kind of hope that redo is the bottleneck for all performance problems :). So if your datapump performance issues still exists after multiple tuning iterations, As DBA’s you explore ways to run the import in NOLOGGING (more...)

OT: On a musical note for 2014’s year ending

There have been some really strong albums that impressed me this year.  I tend to like loud rock stuff but do mix it up somewhat.  What follows is just some ramblings:

The Drive By Truckers have a tremendous album out "English Oceans" if you like rock this is a no brainer.

Jolie Hollands "Wine Dark Sea" album is stunningly magnificent.  It varies quite a bit rocks out and blues it out and then just charms (more...)

racattack, meet ansible-oracle!

A while back I was approached by Jeremy Schneider, who is one of the original contributors to the racattack project and he wanted to know if I was interested in integrating ansible-oracle with the RAC Attack automation project, and of course I was! The idea was to provide a completely hands off installation of an […]

Oracle 12c Implicit Result Sets in SQL Developer 4.1

Ever want to run a Stored Procedure or a PL/SQL anonymous block and just want to "print out" the results of a query ?  Even as a little bit of debug information?

In Oracle 11g you have to create a SQL*Plus REFCURSOR variable and then bind it within the anonymous block  or  pass it as an argument to a procedure/function. Run the code and then print the refcursor.

This requires a bit of know how in (more...)
