How to move OEM12c management agent to new location

While working on another Exadata project recently I found that OEM12c agents on the compute nodes were installed on different locations on each of the three Exadatas. On one of them was under /home/oracle/agent, another one had them under /opt/oracle/agent and third one had them under /oracle/agent. Obviously this was not the standard and the agents had to be moved under /u01/app/oracle/agent. The only problem with that was that the three Exadatas were already discovered (more...)

Introducing Oracle ASM Filter Driver

The Oracle ASMFD (Filter Driver) was introduced in Oracle Database 12.1.0.2 and as of the moment it is available on Linux systems only.

Oracle ASM Filter Driver is a kernel module very much like the ASMLIB that resides in the I/O path of the Oracle ASM disks. It provides an interface between the Oracle binaries and the underlying operating environment.

Here are some of the features of ASMFD:

  • Reject non-Oracle I/O

JSON, Python & Trello

JSON is a simple data storage format intended to allow easy data interchange between programs and systems. Data is stored in a text format as objects of "name : value" pairs. And that's about it, other than objects can be nested (a value could be another whole object) and multiple objects can occur one after another in the data set (a list or array of such objects). This makes it slightly database like because you (more...)

Forms 12c installation

My first installation two days ago wasn't stable. So I had to read the certification matrix to see, what's the problem.

Windows 10 was a little bit to new for my first installation.

So I tried today Windows 8 in a virtual machine. And that's it.

The difference to my first installation is, that the Forms Configuration Manager didn't start.

In Windows 8 the Configuration Manager did start without problems. These steps were shown in (more...)

Linux Kernel Stack Profiling and Flame Graphs Applied to Oracle Investigations

Topic: This blog post is about kernel stack profiling and visualization with flame graphs with examples.

Stack profiling and flame graphs are very useful techniques and tools for troubleshooting and investigating workloads at the OS-level and understand which code path take most of the execution time. You can find extensive material and examples o flame graphs in Brendan Gregg's website and blog. A few additional examples of using stack tracing and flame graphs for (more...)

On Solving the Right Problem

Dear Readers,

It has been quite a while since I wrote on the blog due to some past things that occupied my personal time that had to be addressed. Recently I began to solve new performance related problems for a customer. Here is the scenario:

Oracle 12c RAC
Large enterprise SAN
Converged infrastructure

The target goal is to achieve a minimal performance level (SLA) for storage and system performance.

The customer is only receiving a low (more...)

Oracle SOA/BPM: Payload Validation per Composite

In this article I will explain how you can enable payload validation in the Oracle SOA/BPM Suite per composite, both design and deployment time. This works for 11g as well as 12c

When developing BPM processes or SOA services it is advisable enable payload validation on the development server. The reason being that this will force you to work with more representable test data, and in some occasions help you preventing coding errors (like (more...)

Universal Theme Face Lift

I'm a huge fan of APEX's new Universal Theme, and have been working quite a bit with it.  One of the coolest features is how easy it is to change the colors.  You don't even need to be good at design - just click Theme Roller, and spin all the things!

However, as much as you change the colors, the look and feel still largely looks the same, since the base font is unchanged.

KPI Icon item plugin for Apex

Here's a very simple item plugin that you might find useful. The item plugin displays a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) icon based on the item value.

You can set the threshold values for green and red (and everything in-between will be yellow). Also, you choose whether high values are good or bad.

Since the item itself is a regular Apex item, you can assign a value to it using a computation, process, PL/SQL expression, etc.

RDBMS
The latest roadmap includes extended support on 11.2.

Select all Checkboxes in IR – APEX 5

If <input type="checkbox" onclick="$f_CheckFirstColumn(this)"> doesn't work for you in APEX 5 Interactive Reports then you will need to disable Fixed Headings (standard). Fixed headings splits the report into two tables and the function won't work.

Oracle Live SQL

Oracle Live SQL is a great source for learning SQL and PL/SQL. It has a lot of good examples and interactive educational tutorials. The best thing is, it runs on APEX ;) Add this site to your bookmarks.

AC Adapter can prevent powerline adapters from working if plugged in nearby sockets

Uncategorized
| Oct 22, 2015
I just found out yesterday night that plugging my Apple branded Macbook Pro's AC Adapter into an electrical multioutlet caused the nearby powerline adapter to stop working completely. While it is certainly true that the powerline installation guide recommends to NOT plug the adapters into multioutlets, it must be said that until yesterday it was working just fine in that way. Removing Mac's AC

Dhananjay pinged me today and told me that for their Paypal integration, they had to upgrade to Verisign G5 root certificate.  This was the message from Paypal:
