What’s new in Release 12 for OTBI

There’s a lot to like about the improvements in the imminent release 12 applications, however one of the largest jumps forwards is with OTBI – the ad-hoc analysis tool within the Oracle Cloud. Last week I attended a great webinar from Oracle on the enhancements that R12 introduces.

New Subject Areas

As with every release, Oracle have introduced some new subject areas:

Workforce Learning – Learning Management Real Time

For the new learning application you can see (more...)

Temporal validity and open/closed intervals

A short while ago I created a SQL quiz for Oracle Dev Gym (PL/SQL Challenge) demonstrating the use of temporal validity and VERSIONS PERIOD FOR syntax to create a "change report" for changes in item prices. Use of temporal validity makes this easier, shorter and more readable code, but even though I thought I had it all covered, player Iudith Mentzel pointed out a tiny quirk I'd overlooked.

You see, the "change in price" wasn't (more...)

Oracle Database Cloud (DBaaS) Performance – Part 2 – Storage

In this second part of this installment I'll focus on the performance figures related to I/O encountered when the corresponding tests were performed on the platform.

IOPS

When running with minimum sized buffer cache, direct and asynchronous I/O enabled, the following average read-only IOPS figures were measured over a period of several days (this is the test described in part three of the "performance consistency" series) .

First, running on a 4 OCPU single instance configuration (more...)

Oracle technologies used to analyze the Inaugural Addresses of the Presidents of the United States

The Oracle Database ships with a wonderful technology called Oracle Text.  Most people associate Oracle Text with the mere ability to index documents or data, perform text or phrase queries and get the results back.  But Oracle Text can do so much more.  One of the more interesting features of Oracle Text is the ability to analyze a document and generate a list of themes for the document along with a weight associated with that theme.

APEX Plugin: Calendar Heatmap Region

I was looking at the GitHub "contribution chart", which shows number of commits per day as a heatmap calendar. I thought this type of chart would be cool to have as an APEX plugin, so I went ahead and implemented it.

Here is a video I recorded to walk through how the plugin was made:

Note: For an alternative implementation, see the "Block Calendar" in Oracle JET. As far as I can tell, there (more...)

Funny "ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied" during DataGuard switchover operation from DG broker

Recently one of my customers encountered a problem when they tried to perform a switchover from DataGuard broker command line interface.

Getting Started With Kafka REST Proxy for MapR Streams

Read & comment this article on my new blog Introduction MapR Ecosystem Package 2.0 (MEP) is coming with some new features related to MapR Streams: Kafka REST Proxy for MapR Streams provides a RESTful interface to MapR Streams and Kafka clusters to consume and product messages and to perform administrative operations. Kafka Connect for MapR Streams is a utility for streaming data

onecommand fails to change storage cell name

It’s been a busy month – five Exadata deployments in the past three weeks and new personal best – 2x Exadata X6-2 Eighth Racks with CoD and storage upgrade deployed in only 6hrs!

An issue I encountered with the first deployment was that onecommand wouldn’t change the storage cells names. The default cell names (not hostnames!) are based on where they are mounted within the rack and they are assigned by the elastic configuration (more...)

Oracle E-Business Suite: 250 Security Vulnerabilities Fixed in the Last Year

Oracle has fixed 250 security vulnerabilities in the Oracle E-Business Suite from January 2016 to January 2017.  The past five Oracle Critical Update Updates (CPU) have included double or triple digit number of fixes for Oracle E-Business Suite.  Almost all these security vulnerabilities are exploitable in all versions of Oracle E-Business Suite including 11i, 12.0, 12.1, and 12.2.  Many of the 250 security vulnerabilities fixed are high risk vulnerabilities (more...)

Oracle E-Business Suite 11i – Critical Patch Updates Extended for Tier 1 Support

As of December 2016, Oracle has extended Critical Patch Update (CPU) support for Oracle E-Business Suite 11.5.10 until October 2017 for additional fee Tier 1 support/Advanced Contract Support (ACS) customers.  Starting with the April 2016 Critical Patch Update (CPU), Oracle E-Business Suite 11.5.10 CPU patches are only available for customers with Tier 1/ACS support contracts.  See My Oracle Support Note ID 1596629.1 for more information.

Announcing the SQL Annual Championship for 2016

I've been making SQL quizzes for years now over at the Oracle Dev Gym (or PL/SQL Challenge as it started out as.) Every year I really have to work my few braincells hard when it is time for the annual championships. The players that have made it through at year and managed to rank in the top are awesome at SQL, so I have to write some really hard quizzes for the championship.

web scale patterns in the bol.com back office – Event Sourcing

Last week we started a series of blog posts we show you how we use “web scale” patterns to achieve scaleability and flexibility in our back office software. Last weeks pattern we discussed was CQRS. This week we will dive in to Event Sourcing. Showing you how this doesn’t just solve a technical problem, they helps us solve our business problems!

Details about this incident are available via debug id….

In Oracle Application Express, unexpected exceptions can occasionally occur.  Instead of communicating the technical details to an end user who is running the application, an error message will be issued of the form:

Contact your administrator. Details about this incident are available via debug id "NN".

But what actually happened?  Who is "your administrator"?  And what exactly are you supposed to do with this information?

What happened?

An internal exception occurred - it either wasn't properly (more...)

Re-evaluating APEX Authorization Schemes

Authorization schemes in Oracle APEX are used to control access to page, buttons, and all sorts of other components.

In my experience, these are best defined at a privilege level, where the same privilege could be allocated to multiple business roles, but that's for another post.

In this post, I want to mention a cool API function called apex_authorization.reset_cache, which helps control the behaviour of these authorization schemes.

I’m speaking at Advanced Spark Meetup & attending Deep Learning Workshop in San Francisco

In case you are interested in the “New World” and happen to be in Bay Area this week (19 & 21 Jan 2017), there are two interesting events that you might want to attend (I’ll speak at one and attend the other):

Advanced Spark and TensorFlow Meetup

I’m speaking at the advanced Apache Spark meetup and showing different ways for profiling applications with the main focus on CPU efficiency. This is a free Meetup in San Francisco hosted (more...)

Using APEX_ERROR to manage custom error messages

Sometimes you just feel like you would be a newbie in coding business applications. Luckily it doesn't happen so often anymore. But this time it hit me hard. :)

During an application upgrade on Universal Theme I discovered an ugly workaround to create custom error messages I used in that time.

The old code looked like that:
declare
retval number;
p_cust_id number;
p_status varchar2(30);
p_upduser varchar2(10);

begin
p_cust_id := :p1_cust_id;
p_status := 0;
p_upduser := (more...)

New Year, New Look – Get a New UI on Us

before_after_sapiens
Looks DO matter! Today’s users are fed up with the current look and feel of their Oracle Forms / EBS System, many of which were developed last century.  But we know how hard it can be to take the first step towards modernization. As Forms administrators / DBA’s your management many not want to believe there is any life left in these applications and won’t move forward. He probably thinks its wiser to move on. But (more...)
