Announcing the SQL Annual Championship for 2016

I've been making SQL quizzes for years now over at the Oracle Dev Gym (or PL/SQL Challenge as it started out as.) Every year I really have to work my few braincells hard when it is time for the annual championships. The players that have made it through at year and managed to rank in the top are awesome at SQL, so I have to write some really hard quizzes for the championship.

web scale patterns in the bol.com back office – Event Sourcing

Last week we started a series of blog posts we show you how we use “web scale” patterns to achieve scaleability and flexibility in our back office software. Last weeks pattern we discussed was CQRS. This week we will dive in to Event Sourcing. Showing you how this doesn’t just solve a technical problem, they helps us solve our business problems!

I’m speaking at Advanced Spark Meetup & attending Deep Learning Workshop in San Francisco

In case you are interested in the “New World” and happen to be in Bay Area this week (19 & 21 Jan 2017), there are two interesting events that you might want to attend (I’ll speak at one and attend the other):

Advanced Spark and TensorFlow Meetup

I’m speaking at the advanced Apache Spark meetup and showing different ways for profiling applications with the main focus on CPU efficiency. This is a free Meetup in San Francisco hosted (more...)

Using APEX_ERROR to manage custom error messages

Sometimes you just feel like you would be a newbie in coding business applications. Luckily it doesn't happen so often anymore. But this time it hit me hard. :)

During an application upgrade on Universal Theme I discovered an ugly workaround to create custom error messages I used in that time.

The old code looked like that:
declare
retval number;
p_cust_id number;
p_status varchar2(30);
p_upduser varchar2(10);

begin
p_cust_id := :p1_cust_id;
p_status := 0;
p_upduser := (more...)

New Year, New Look – Get a New UI on Us

Looks DO matter! Today’s users are fed up with the current look and feel of their Oracle Forms / EBS System, many of which were developed last century.  But we know how hard it can be to take the first step towards modernization. As Forms administrators / DBA’s your management many not want to believe there is any life left in these applications and won’t move forward. He probably thinks its wiser to move on. But (more...)

Resolve PDP Error for Named Credentials

Background

Some of our named credentials use a privileged account to perform root actions via sudo. That account is not the same as the OEM agent binary owner and does not belong to the binary owner’s o/s groups for security reasons.

Sometime that causes problems, like this:

PDP execution may have failed 3430 Insecure operation – please consult your administrator pbrun8.5.1-01[112628]: 3201.07 Exec of /usr/bin/pb_sudo failed: Operation not permitted

The Relational Data Model

Mid-eighties. I was studying Computer Science. Little did I know back then that this thing called "The Relational Data Model" (RDM) would become huge in the IT-industry. The topic was still hot in academia at that time. My luck was that I liked those courses. Predicate Logic, Set Theory, Database Design, SQL. I aced them all. It was no surprise then, that I ended up working with Oracle software

Python for PL/SQL Developers Series

How hard it is to learn a new language? It depends on the learner, of course; but everyone will agree that it is easier to get your feet wet if you learn the corresponding structures of a language you are already proficient in. That's the principle behind my new article series on Oracle Technology Network: Python for PL/SQL Developers. If you are at least an intermediate level in PL/SQL, you will jumpstart your learning Python (more...)

APEX IR column only exportable for administrators

A few days ago I tweeted about a solution from Martin Giffy D'Souza to hide a specific column from export.

In my case I needed some username columns to be displayed during run-time but only exportable for administrators. The export itself was made with the default APEX (more...)

Pardon the Dust: Transition in Progress

Things might look a little different on the blog if you haven’t been back in a while.  And, things might not be working quite up to par for a bit.  Please pardon the dust.  I’m trying to get things back in order as quickly as my schedule allows.

So, here’s what’s going on: I am moving my website to a VPS.  My term at Hostgator expired, and I decided that this next year, I want (more...)

How to add an NCSA style Access Log to ORDS Standalone

What ORDS Standalone is      ORDS Standalone webserver which is Eclipse Jetty, https://eclipse.org/jetty/ .  For the standalone, ORDS sends output to STDOUT, it runs on the command line.  That means there's nothing like a control commands like startup, shutdown,status nor log files, access logs.  It's bare bones intentionally to get up and running fast.  Then it's recommended for anything with

Unable to perform initial elastic configuration on Exadata X6

I had the pleasure to deploy another Exadata in the first week of 2017 and got my first issue this year.

As we know starting with Exadata X5, Oracle introduced the concept of Elastic Configuration. Apart from allowing you to mix and match the number of compute nodes and storage cells they have also changed how the IP addresses are assigned on the admin (eth0) interface. Prior X5, Exadata had default IP addresses set at (more...)
