EECS – Oracle Exadate Express Cloud Service, Step 3

Once you have defined your users for your Express Cloud Service, all users with the role of Database Developer or higher can access the database Service Console. From here all database related actions can be started.
The upper category, Web Access, brings you to the specified part of the APEX builder - more on that in the next post. In the lower category you can create database schema's. For our goal within smart4apex, I created (more...)

EECS – Oracle Exadata Express Cloud Service, Step 2

Once you get your services up and running, you can log into your domain - in this screenhot "smart4apex" - on the Oracle Cloud.
Then you'll end up in the "My Services" dashboard. As I have only one, my dashboard looks quite clean, showing just this widget:
Just a few remarks for the designers of this: I am very curious why there is an extra "(Number of ..." in the chart title. The same (more...)

From Microservices to Distributed Systems – Survival guide for Java Developers

It kind of feel like the hype for Microservices is slowly coming down to earth and our industry is starting to realise, that a system according to the architectural paradigms behind Microservices can't easily be created by just exposing some HTTP interfaces on top of existing components. We do seem to have agreement on the necessity of having service optimised infrastructures, cultural and organisational changes and last but not least the outer architecture or orchestration (more...)

Kudos to the Dodeca Support Team!

Here at Applied OLAP, we have a great support team that we have tasked with doing their best to make sure our customers are happy with their Dodeca software.  On most days, they are answering emails and firing up impromptu support webcasts to help our customers with any questions they have.

Today, we got some great feedback from a customer after a popup support webcast.  Here is an email I received today from Edgardo Rodriguez (more...)

Error ORA-14766: Unable To Obtain A Stable Metadata Snapshot

A customer called me up and said that he’s hitting “ORA-14766: Unable To Obtain A Stable Metadata Snapshot” and he’s coming up dry on his google search.
This was the first time I encountered this problem, so I thought I’d investigate and write a few words about it, because the problem seems it might be pretty common and the solution was a bit weird.

The Problem

Intermittent ORA-06502 error when running APEX 5 on 12c

We upgraded our environment from 11.2 to 12c last week. This week we noticed an error in one of our APEX pages, a rather simple form for entering data. Nothing fancy, nothing spectacular - only a spectacular error when you tried to edit a record.
Running the page in debug mode (even on LEVEL9) wasn't very helpful as you can see below (10 points who immediately spots the error!).
The error didn't (more...)

SLOB Use Cases By Industry Vendors. Learn SLOB, Speak The Experts’ Language.

This is just a quick blog entry to showcase a few of the publications from IT vendors showcasing SLOB. SLOB allows performance engineers to speak in short sentences. As I’ve pointed out before, SLOB is not used to test how well Oracle handles transaction. If you are worried that Oracle cannot handle transactions then you have bigger problems than what can be tested with SLOB. SLOB is how you test whether–or how well–a platform can (more...)

Oracle Database adapter, invalid customization

Just wasted a few hours of my life.

I’m trying to update a dbadapter with a some wlst and a property file.
Result :
connection_pools
Same eis connection is getting added 3 times.

After this i can’t delete the duplicate entries in the console.

The outbound connection instance eis/DB/myDC in group javax.resource.cci.ConnectionFactory is defined explicitly in the applications deployment descriptors and may not
be deleted via the console.

First steps using the Oracle Exadata Express Cloud Service

The Oracle Exadata Express Cloud Service was announced at Oracle Open World 2016. This service looks like an excellent use case for Oracle Database development purposes as well as setting up a test environment. And even for small to medium sized production situations it looks very promising as you can see in the table below. Especially the cheapest option offers a lot of bang for your bucks.
But alas, this service was not as widely (more...)

How to Upgrade an Oracle-based Application without Downtime

One of most common reasons IT departments avoid database development is the belief that an application upgrade in the database causes downtime. However, nothing can be further from the truth. On the contrary, Oracle Database provides one of the most bullet proof ways to upgrade an application without any downtime: Edition Based Redefinition (EBR)

EBR is a powerful and fascinating feature of Oracle (added in version 11.2), that enables application upgrades with zero downtime (more...)

ilOUG meetup: Oracle 12c New Features For Better Performance (slides)

It’s been a while since the Israeli user group (iloug) had a technology meetup (SIG meeting). The last time that happened was over two years ago – and since then, we only had the bigger conferences with guests from all over the world. Yesterday we renewed that long time tradition and held such a meetup.

Although I am not part of the OUG board (and not for the lack of trying, just no elections for (more...)

Profiles of the Future

I've been thinking about the laws of the universe recently and came across a book written by the science fiction master Arthur C. Clarke called Profiles of the Future. Over the course of many years and several revisions he put forward the hypothesis that there are 3 laws for predicting the future. These are:
Clarke's first law
When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he (more...)

Oracle Linux Update from 7.2 to 7.3 crashes with uncorrectable CPU error

During the Upgrade of Oracle Linux 7.2 to 7.3 with “yum update”, when updating the microcode_ctl package, the system crashed and firmware reported an uncorrectable CPU error after reboot.

It turned out that the update of the package in combination with specific Intel CPUs causes the issue. In the meantime, there is a red hat bug and solution available.
