ODA Bug (?) and poor support from oracle – Need information from Your system …

long story told short:

  • Oracle Database Appliance X6-2M and X7-2M,
  • oak 12.1.2.11 up to 12.2.1.4

We were not able to create databases anymore on one of our 15 ODAs. Detailled analysis has shown that the dbid - result from an 'odacli describe-database -i <DB identifier>' - grows and grows and, when it reaches a size of more than 255 characters, any subsequent try to create a database will fail (more...)

ODA X7 – no network connect after setup / re-image

Yesterday, I’d prepared an all new X7-2M. During the setup process / network configuration (using VLAN), I ran into a problem: Despite the network configuration was setup absolutely correct, any try to connect to the system from a jumphost was unsuccessful.

Long story short: If You want to use the SFP28 (Fiberchannel) ports an ODA X7 offers, You have to do some config changes, to make it work.
First of all: do a (more...)

How to copy Files to an ODA which is not available via network – by using the network

Sounds a little weird, I know - but works ... *lol*

Problem was:

The all new ODA has installed old firmware for the SPF28 interfaces. This makes it impossible to connect the system to the network. To upgrade the interfaces You need to have the firmware files on the ODA ... but how can I copy the firmware to the ODA without a network connect?

Solution:

First of all: create an ISO File from the Files You (more...)

Enterprise Manager and the disadvantages of WLS’ Dynamic Monitoring Service (lots of metricdump files)

Had an interesting problem this morning with a customers Windows Server where Enterprise Manager 12c is running: Disk C: - where the EM Software is installed - was full. By the way: Imho, oracle software should never ever be installed in C: ...

The Problem:

Reason for the full disk was Weblogic's Dynamic Monitoring Service (or a weak housekeeping tool ;-)).
Explained:
Weblogic has a feature, called DMS, which is checking some domain metrics and saves (more...)

ODA X6-2M – Expanding Storage can be unsuccessful when impatient

In 'A Brief History of Time' (RIP Mr. Hawking), Chapter 2 is named 'Space and Time' – and this title fits perfect with a current problem, I was faced with, when expanding disk capacity in an ODA X6-2M.

Long story, told short

An ODA X6-2M, equipped with the standard disk configuration, ran out of space and my customer decided to add two NVMe's. So, he ordered two NVMe's – and, by the way - we (more...)

ODA Xx – Space Waste When Using ACFS (instead of ASM) For Databases

Disclaimer: I will not discuss the necessity of an ACFS FS to store database files, nor compare ASM and ACFS or it's benefits. What to use / what fits best in Your environment is up to You, folks … ;-)

Pretty sure that this is for lots of people a well-known problem – but for all others:

When creating a database using ACFS as storage option, a FS of size 100GB is created. This 100GB (more...)

EXPDP using an External Password Store – facing a new ‘release’ of a well known performance issue

After a while without blogging, here a new blog post talking about a very well known performance issue:

export (exp as well as expdp) is usually slower when using an TCP based TNS-Alias instead of setting ORACLE_SID. Remember? ;-)

In a little more detail:
An "expdb system/manager@db directory= ..." takes (usually) more time than an
"export ORACLE_SID=DB; expdp system/manager directory= ..."

But what if You have to use an external password store - a (more...)

Problem "bind csid (#) does not match session csid (#)"

After further investigation and analysis, here some more news regarding the problem with "bind csid (#) does not match session csid (#)"

SQLcl – the SQL*Plus plus a plus …

"euphoric: intensely happy or confident", @thatjeffsmith, https://youtu.be/ecgijS76jvw ...

Just watched the video from @thatjeffsmith about SQLcl - and it is, indeed, worth the time. After looking that video, I'm pretty sure that SQLcl will replace SQL*Plus within months (if some more people 'spread the word').

Just a few keywords to make you curious:

  • SQLcl is available as 'standalone' download, but it is also already part of the latest SQLDeveloper 17.2. (more...)

ODA X6-2S – upgrade from 12.1.2.10.0 to 12.1.2.11.0 … just a few remarks

Did an update of our ODA X6-2S from 12.1.2.10.0 to 12.1.2.11.0 Patch Bundle and want to share some findings.

The patching process is described quite good in the README - nevertheless, a few remarks:

  • the whole process took about 2 hours - without downloading the necessary files and preparations (for example: read the README ;-))
  • The time, the update process takes, depends on the number of (more...)

dbca – db creation stops with dbmssml.sql error

Abstract:

Trying to create a database using dbca on a Oracle Linux 7 running in a Virtualbox Container. DBCA throws an error during database creation: something like "dbmssml.sql. refer to dbmssml0.log error in process: perl". The mentioned log file is empty.

Solution:

Important!: It is NOT a database software or a dbca problem. Additionally, if You run a 'perl -v' command, You'll receive a 'segmentation error' - this is, too, not (more...)

OracleXADataSource cannot be cast to java.sql.Driver

Tried to start a Forms / Reports Server on an all new server. During startup of the AdminServer, I got an errormessage:

ODA X6 – netca cannot add listener – displaying ‘Use another port number’ messages

Tried to create e new listener to run on a non-default portnumber on an ODA X6. Each time when adding a new port number (doesn't matter which number) an error screen pops up, stating that I shall choose another port number:

How to install and configure Oracle Forms & Reports 12c fully unattended – Part 2

Part 2?? Yes! Part 1 - Install FMW Infrastructure and Forms / Reports - can be found at Dirk Nachbars Blog. URL will be shown here as soon as available

The Task:

You have to create several new Forms 12c Domains / Environments

The Problem:

All oracle is providing to create Forms Domains is a Graphical User Interface. And there is no possibility of a 'silent' domain creation. In other words: Oracle does not support (more...)

Forms Application shows a ‘FRM-40735: WHEN-CUSTOM-ITEM-EVENT trigger raised unhandled exception ORA-06508’ after upgrade to 11.1.2.2.0

Situation:

After an upgrade from 11.1.2.1.0 to 11.1.2.2.0 and a patch apply of patch 19933795 (see post Forms Application does not run anymore after java upgrade to 1.8_131 on client), the application shows an 'FRM-40735: WHEN-CUSTOM-ITEM-EVENT trigger raised unhandled exception ORA-06508':

Solution:

I had to recreate the webutil repository (create_webutil_db.sql) and to recompile webutil.pll. After that, the application runs fine again ...

Coming soon: How to create Forms / Reports Domains by using scripts (Non-GUI)

With Forms Reports 12c, Oracle does not support anymore the creation of Forms / Reports domains using a 'silent' mechanism. That isn't a problem when creating only a few domains - but when Your intention is standardization or You have to create several domains, a CLI based 'Forms Domain Config' is a must.

Based on information, I got from Jan-Peter Timmermann (Jan-Peter's Weblog), I developed a scriptset to create a complete Forms Reports (more...)

ODA X4 – Migrating a database from ASM to ACFS

As promised ... Here's the post about migrating a database from ASM to ACFS on an ODA 4 - probably, this will work for newer ODA Servers as well

Given:

- Oracle Database Appliance machine, X4-<something>
- Software Release 12.1.2.7.0
- Prepared DB Software: 11.2.0.3, 11.2.0.4, 12.1.0.2

Story behind:
