I have yet to encounter a database that ever got smaller. Like waistlines and the US national debt, all databases seem destined to increase in size. The E-Business Suite is no exception: as we add more product capabilities and your
business grows, so do your Apps databases.
Oracle-supplied solutions to managing Applications database size fall into two categories: data growth control methods and data management methods.
Growth Control Methods
-
Archiving and purging
-
Database compression
Data Management Methods
A new Oracle whitepaper discussing these topics is now available:

This complements the Apps 12-corresponding announcement: Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i has been certified with seven new
platforms for DB Vault 10gR2 (10.2.0.4). This configuration is now certified with the following new operating system platforms:
It's always nice to start the week off with some new certification announcements. I'm pleased to announce that several new platforms have been added to our previously-announced
certification of DB Vault 10gR2 (10.2.0.4) with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12. This configuration is now certified on the following new operating system platforms:
-
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (32-bit x86)
-
HP-UX PA-RISC 11.11, 11.23. 11.31

Our blogging team continues to expand to include the authoritative experts from our E-Business Suite Development team. I'm very happy to welcome Ada Constanzo-Muller to our growing panel of contributing authors to this blog.
Like Ivo Dujmovic and Noby Joseph, Ada is a key member of our
Oracle Applications Technology Integration team. The Applications Technology Integration group integrates components such as Oracle Application Server and Oracle Database into the Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack.
Here's more information about Ada's background:
Ada Constanzo-Muller is a Senior Manager in the Oracle Applications Technology Integration group. In particular she manages the TXK template development team, a global team in charge of configuration projects and configuration related bug fixing for
Oracle Applications Release 11i and Release 12. Her team also provides the installation scripts use by the Applications Platform Group team to stage the different Oracle Homes shipped via Oracle Applications Rapid Install. Her team works closely with the TXK
AutoConfig engine team; the templates her team produces are instantiated by the AutoConfig engine.
Ada has been with Oracle since March 1994 and has had individual contributor and managerial responsibilities within Oracle. She started her Oracle career in the Applications Porting division porting Oracle Applications (starting with Applications 10.5) to
different platforms. Ada has also worked in the Applications Administration (AD) development team and the Platform Management Kit (PKM) team (base applications release team). She spent a lot of her time in PKM performing applications upgrades from 10.7 to
11.0 and then to 11.5 with databases with sizes of up to 3 Terabytes.
Prior to joining Oracle, Ada worked in a private company developing proprietary newsroom software, and has worked in the defense industry working in signal processing projects. Ada has more than two decades in the software development industry where she
has held roles in all areas of the industry, first as a developer coding in PL/1, Ada, C, Perl; porting various software systems to different UNIX platforms, and as a development manager. She holds an M.S. in Computer Science and a B.Sc in Mathematics. She
is also fluent in Spanish.
Oracle JInitiator is definitely in its sunset phase now. JInitiator 1.1.8 will no longer receive any new bug fixes as of December 31, 2008. Similarly, official Error Correction Support for JInitiator 1.3 will end as of July 31, 2009.
I don't have statistics on how many E-Business Suite customers have converted their desktop clients from Oracle JInitiator to the native Sun Java (JRE) client. Given the impending desupport dates for these two client codelines, I hope that all of you
have already switched over -- or, at minimum -- are in the process of migrating your end-users' desktops to the native Sun Java plug-in.

In these final days of support for Oracle JInitiator, I'm pleased to announce that JInitiator 1.3.1.30 is now certified with the E-Business Suite Release 11i. Oracle JInitiator 1.3.1.30 is released via Patch 7410076.
It requires Apps Interoperability Patch 6169479.
I'm (still) highlighting OpenWorld 2008 presentations that cover some of the most popular E-Business Suite technology stack topics. A catalog of all of the Applications Technology track sessions with links to the presentations is available here:
E-Business Suite sysadmins know that there are a lot of different ways to deploy their system in production. You can split EBS services across multiple application tier and database tier server nodes, you can scale up with load-balancers and Real
Application Clusters, you can integrate your E-Business Suite instance with optional external services like Oracle Single Sign-On and the Oracle SOA Suite, and much, much more.
The number of architectural options can be pretty bewildering, and it can be difficult to get a high-level overview of the relative benefits of each option. We have lots of detailed documentation and introductory blog articles on, say, implementing
RAC, but it's very difficult to get a sense of whether you can combine a reverse proxy in front of a load-balanced cluster with a RAC-enabled database tier (this is feasible, by the way).
I'm going to get through my OpenWorld backlog eventually. If I'm lucky, I'll be done just in time to start working on my OAUG/Collaborate backlog for next year's conference in Florida.

Ramkumar Sekar, a manager in our Applications Technology Group, gave sneak previews of two new developer-oriented tools for extending OA Framework applications in this session:

Our recent article about using Advanced Compression with the E-Business Suite has generated a lot of excitement. This 11gR1 database option
has a lot of potential, with its dual benefits of database size reduction and application speed increases. Our Applications Performance Group is planning to do
some formal benchmarks of this technology with the E-Business Suite soon, but it looks like someone's beaten them to the punch and published some quantitative comparisons for a simple testcase.
Filling out our certification matrix for Oracle VM, our Applications Platform Group has certified Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 on Oracle VM with 64-bit Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 on x86-64.
Some of you have been escalating your requests for updates on our upcoming Firefox 3 certification through Oracle Support and your Oracle account managers. These escalations ultimately end up in my beleaguered inbox. The buck stops here.
We are acutely aware that the clock is ticking for Firefox 2. Our certification of Firefox 3 with both Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12 is still underway. As I've discussed
previously, I am strictly prohibited from discussing release dates of upcoming certifications or products. I can, however, share our progress on this certification.
As an enthusiastic Apple iPhone user, I am very pleased to see that our Applications Unlimited team has released their newest iPhone application: Oracle Business
Approvals for Managers. This free (!) iPhone application allows managers to handle pending E-Business Suite actions related to expense reports, purchase order requisitions, human resources vacancies, and HR job offers. Managers can use this
mobile app to evaluate pending EBS approvals, request more information, and approve or reject pending requests.
This iPhone app builds on the Oracle Business Indicators iPhone application. Oracle Business Approvals for Managers provides optional access to analytic reports related to the type of approval that users are reviewing. This configuration
retrieves data from Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition Plus (OBIEE) or Oracle Business Intelligence Applications. All communications are secured via SSL encryption and may be optionally integrated with Oracle Identity Management components,
too.
I'm very pleased to welcome Noby Joseph as a new contributing author to this blog. Noby is a key member of Ivo Dujmovic's team and has spent countless hours
patiently explaining the hidden secrets of the E-Business Suite technology stack to me. Like Ivo, Noby has been providing deep technical guidance for this blog from the wings since its inception, so we're very lucky to have his direct contributions.
Here's more information about his background:
Noby Joseph is a Principal Software Engineer in the Oracle Applications Technology Integration group, and spends the majority of his time on Advanced technology stack configurations with Oracle E-Business Suite releases.
Noby has been with Oracle since 2000 and has over 10 years of experience in the software industry. He started his career as a developer at Centre for Development of Advanced Computing,
Bangalore working on SCADA systems and then moved to Oracle USA. At Oracle, he spend first three years of his career in the Product Line Engineering division responsible for porting Oracle E-Business Suite Software to various Unix platforms, then moved on to
Oracle Applications Technology Integration group.
Noby works in the Oracle USA Development Centre located at Redwood Shores, California
Like Advanced Compression, Oracle Real Application Testing is one of the new Oracle Database 11gR1 Enterprise Edition options that's generating a lot of excitement amongst E-Business Suite users. This separately-licenced 11gR1 Database option has real
potential to streamline and accelerate testing cycles for database upgrades.
I'm pleased to announce that Oracle Real Application Testing is certified with Oracle Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12. E-Business Suite users can follow the standard database documentation for implementing Real Application Testing in their
environments.

The US Office of Management and Budget (OMB) manages the budget for US Federal Government agencies. The US Office of Management and Budget mandates that all US Federal Agencies that use or acquire
Windows XP and Vista must adopt the Federal Desktop Core Configuration (FDCC) by February 1, 2008 (OMB Memorandum M-0-7-11 of March 22, 2007, on Implementation of Commonly Accepted Security Configurations for Windows Operating Systems, available at http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/memoranda/fy2007/m07-11.pdf).
Oracle has just published the following document in the Oracle Software Security Assurance Resource Library to address these requirements:
In conjunction with that document's release, I'm pleased to announce that Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i is certified with the US Federal Desktop Core Configuration for Windows XP and Vista desktop clients. All E-Business Suite Release
11i products are certified for use with the US Federal Desktop Core Configuration.
